Hurricane Melissa is predicted to escalate to a uncommon category five cyclone as it veers in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening sudden floods and landslides.

This weather system, which recorded wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean region and is projected to make landfall by early next week, according to hurricane specialists.

Warnings of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as this storm brings up to 76cm of rainfall and storm surges as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," residents have been told.

This hurricane is the 13th cyclone in the current Atlantic season, which normally finishes in November.

Most Intense Cyclone Risk

A category five cyclone is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

While the hurricane is set to diminish in strength to a category four hurricane before making landfall on the island, authorities said there was "minimal real distinction in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the cyclone will be "equally strong" when it impacts the nation.

With tropical storm-level winds and rain predicted to begin ahead of it crosses central Jamaica - possibly even the city of Kingston - warnings emphasize that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"An extended timeframe of destructive gusts and torrential rain have begun and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and many mudslides," counseled meteorological officials.

The nation's leader Andrew Holness commented: "I know that there are countless citizens who are anxious, who are very concerned, and rightfully so: worry is natural.

"But the most effective method to manage anxiety and any unease and concern is to stay ready."

Residents are being advised to fortify their houses with protective bags and wooden boards, and to gather essentials.

Wider Impact

Warnings are also ongoing for regions of Haiti including the primary urban center, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is anticipated to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides already being caused by the hurricane have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Future Course

Melissa is projected to cross the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it reaches Cuba, it is forecast to have reduced to a category three hurricane.
