Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
